Merge Field Support?

    Merge Field Support?

I am very excited about Aspose.Editor - It will make what we do alot easier.  We use Aspose.Words for all of our mail merging and being able to edit the documents directly would be a real help (rather than currently, editing an HTML version...)

Do you know if there will be mergefield support for aspose.editor?  If this already exists, apologies, but i could not find it.

    Thanks,

    Greg

    Re: Merge Field Support?

Thank you for your interest in Aspose.Editor.

Fields as document elements are not currently supported in the editor. However, due to lossless editing technology we use, document fields are preserved in open-edit-save cycle until user deletes them manually. While editing, unknowns (any item which is not supported yet) are drawn as icons - red squares with the cross, so the user can see their location, delete them or keep them intact.

If you have Aspose.Words product at your disposal then it’s even possible to print documents containing such unsupported items using Aspose.Words rendering capabilities.

As regards mail merge feature, we have no plans to implement it in the editor. Performing mail merge is one of the primary usage scenarios of Aspose.Words. It provides rich API for fast server-side non-visual document processing and converting documents among many formats. Aspose.Editor also exposes rich API for document processing but it is designed with visual editing in mind and is not suitable for ultra-fast server-side documents processing. Off course, Aspose.Editor is fast enough for client-server application, as the matter of fact it is faster in times on many operations then MS Word Automation, but Aspose.Words have much greater performance and may process a huge number of pages per second server-side due to its specific non-visual design.

You can obtain documents from the server, get them processed by user in Aspose.Editor, send them back, and then mail-merge them with Aspose.Words. So Aspose.Editor and Aspose.Words do not replace but complement each other in the document processing pipeline.

    Re: Merge Field Support?

    Thanks for the quick response.

I think you mis-understood me a little.  I did not mean to ask if Aspose.Editor could perform the actual mail merge - only if it was going to support the fields etc.  By this, I mean, insert --> field --> mergefield.  In order to edit the mail merge templates.

    Thanks

    Re: Merge Field Support?

    Sorry for misunderstanding.

Yes we plan to support field editing in future. But exact dates are not yet known. Current priority is

    1. Tables
    2. Images
    3. Lists
    4. (fields, bookmarks, header/footer, revisions etc. have same priority).

However, if we find this feature to be of interest to significant number of customers (or potential customers) we should probably assign a high priority to fields support.

    Re: Merge Field Support?

Are you using Aspose.Editor with Aspose.Total license?

    Re: Merge Field Support?

We have an aspose.total license but are not actually using the editor yet.  I've just been playing with the demo really.

    Re: Merge Field Support?

The ability to edit/insert merge fields and tables are of equal interest in our implementation. We were specifically looking at the Aspose.Total package for this ability. Since it is not there we will be sticking with office automation for now.

    Thank you.

    Re: Merge Field Support?

Same situation for my company.  It is critical for the Editor control to be able to insert merge fields so that the Aspose suite can be used from end-to-end, as both the template creation software (Aspose.Editor) and the mail merge engine (Aspose.Words).  Aspose seems like the best solution to a lot of problems we need to solve in our application but we may have to use something else if we can't use the Editor to create templates for the mail merge library.  Hope you all add something to handle this in the future!

    Re: Merge Field Support?

It has been over a year, has there been any progress on adding field editing in Aspose.Editor?

It would be very useful to allow users to place merge fields into documents created or edited by Aspose.Editor.

    Thanks.

    Re: Merge Field Support?

    Thanks for the question.

Merge field support is still in the queue since the current feature in development is table support.
